Under 10's D5 vs Irlam Vale

Game Of The Week

U10’s Division 5 – 15/12/2007

Irlam Vale ‘B’ 0 – 4 Earlestown Athletic ‘B’

The ever improving under 10’s ‘B’ team stretched their winning streak to 4 with a fantastic win against a stubborn Irlam Vale side.

Following an 8-0 defeat at the hands of Earlestown the previous week, Irlam started the match like they had a point to prove. They were quick to close down and looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

Earlestown stuck to their usual slick passing game and were knocking on the door with early chances for Cameron Thompson and Sam Buckley.

It was Irlam who had went closest though as they were given a free-kick on the edge of the box. Keeper Mitchell Doolan showing cat-like reflexes to tip the goal-bound effort on to the post and out for the relative safety of a corner.

That close call seemed to spur the Earlestown lads into action and following a 5 minute period of pressure, Sam Buckley showed the importance of being in the right place at the right time and bagged his sixth goal of the season. He superbly crashed the ball home from around 6 yards following a goalmouth scramble.

Irlam tried to hit back but most of their efforts were cancelled out in midfield by the ever improving Andy Quick, the industrious Toby Ruane and the tough-tackling Oliver Nash.

When Irlam did breach the midfield, they were met with the rock-solid duo of Jack Molyneux and Grant Edgar who mopped up everything that came their way with the minimum of fuss.

A sustained period of pressure resulted in the second goal right on the stroke of half time. A fantastic move that started off in defence and seemed to involve every player on the team, resulted in Cameron Thompson swooping to bag his seventh of the season with another clinical finish. As usual, Cam celebrated in his inimitable style.

In the second half, Earlestown upped the pace a notch and created chance after chance. Even the defenders were getting in on the act. Running at Irlam and having a number of excellent shots.

Even without the absent power duo of Kyle Appleton and Ross Ireland, the combination of Oliver, Andy and Toby pulling the strings in midfield, tackling hard and providing fantastic service for the front two, further goals seemed inevitable.

Following a scuffed goal-kick, the superb Jack, who was returning from one of his forays up-front, reacted fastest to fire home a stunning shot from around 20 yards. This was Jack’s second goal in consecutive matches and both of them have been from outside the area.

The match was finished in fine style following a powerful, mazy dribble from Cameron. Once inside the box he un-selfishly picked out the unmarked Toby, who found the top corner with a wonderful looping shot.

Once again, and due to the efforts of the outfield players, Mitchell had little to do. But when called into action he was alert and did everything spot-on to achieve yet another clean sheet – his 4th of the season.

At the final whistle, there were hand-shakes and big smiles all round.

Coach Steve Ruane said, "The team is going from strength to strength and playing superb football. Ady and I could not be prouder of them. Ever player is really playing their part. What a great way to end 2007."

The Man of the Match was deservedly given to Oliver Nash, and Player of the Week was awarded to Cameron Thompson.
